When a material absorbs modulated or pulsed light and generates acoustic waves, it is known as the photoacoustic (PA) effect. The PA has been exploited for applications in various fields, including biomedical imaging, biological sensing, brain stimulation, and also in non-biological applications such as semiconductor testing and nondestructive evaluation in the railway industry. PA sensing, as a hybrid measurement technique, involves the illumination of an object with lasers and subsequent acoustic detection of the generated PA signals. This approach provides distinct advantages, such as wavelength selectivity, high spatial resolution, and enhanced optical contrast. In comparison, unlike PA sensing emphasizing acoustic detection, PA transmission focuses on sound generation and utilizes custom-designed PA transmitters to produce specific acoustic waves, which is often difficult to achieve with conventional acoustic transducers. This review examines PA sensing and transmission techniques, and their existing and future applications. © 2025 The Author(s)
