The Setting and Its Background of Fan Ye's “Annals of the Empress”

초록

The Houhanshu, written by Fan Ye, organizes records of empresses in the same annalistic format as emperors. This is a unique and unconventional approach not seen in other biographical historical texts. Previous studies have explained the appearance of the “Annals of Empress”(Huanghouji) in the Houhanshu as a product of the political characteristics of the Later Han period, where empress dowagers frequently assumed regency, as well as the influence of Hua Jiao’s Hanhoushu. However, it is also necessary to consider the historical context of the periods in which Hua Jiao and Fan Ye lived. From this perspective, this study examines records related to empresses in the Dongguanhanji, a fundamental source for various Later Han records. It also explores how the founding of the Western Jin dynasty influenced Hua Jiao’s Huanghouji and how the regencies of the Eastern Jin dynasty, along with perceptions of Empress Dowager Deng in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties, may have shaped Fan Ye’s Huanghouji. Through this analysis, the study suggests that records akin to the Huanghouji had already been structured in the Dongguanhanji, that Hua Jiao’s Huanghouji was written to legitimize the orders issued in the name of the empress dowager of Wei dynasty and to justify the establishment of the Western Jin dynasty, and that Fan Ye’s Huanghouji may have been intended to provide a positive evaluation of Empress Dowager Deng.
