A Systematic Exploration of Electrolyte Diluents for High-Voltage Li-Metal Batteries

Demand for higher-energy-density energy storage devices continues to escalate, fueled by the rapid expansion of electrified transportation and renewable energy integration. Although pairing a Li-metal anode and a LiNixMnyCozO2 cathode is an ideal configuration, its practical implementation has been hindered by the lack of electrolytes offering a sufficiently wide potential window. Locally high concentration electrolytes with weakly coordinating diluents have emerged as a promising; however, the underlying principles governing diluent selection remain poorly understood and largely empirical. In this study, we establish a systematic framework for diluent exploration based on a full-cell potential diagram by combining Li+/Li redox-potential measurements and electrochemical floating tests. Electrolytes formulated with the screened diluents substantially destabilize the liquid Madelung potential of Li+ to raise up Li+/Li redox potential while preserving high oxidative stability, thereby suppressing electrolyte decomposition at both the anode and cathode.
