초록

Given the global public health concerns surrounding both alcohol misuse and suicide, this study explores the emergence process of suicidal ideation among people with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using qualitative content analysis, we analyzed 65 memoirs published by Alcoholics Anonymous Korea that explicitly described AUD as well as the emergence of suicidal ideation. Our analysis revealed experiential aspects that allowed us to refine the existing process of suicidal ideation among people with AUD, previously categorized based on empirical studies. The emergence process was classified into seven stages: (1) alcohol abuse and intoxication; (2) AUD; (3) problems; (4) negative life events; (5) internal distress; (6) problem avoidance and alcohol as a coping mechanism; and (7) despair. Although the lack of a social support system was not a distinct stage, it reinforced the vicious cycle from AUD to despair. In particular, the lack of social support during the stage of despair appeared to function as a risk factor, contributing to continued alcohol use and sustained feelings of hopelessness. Future research could build on this study by conducting longitudinal quantitative research to examine the emergence process of suicidal ideation among people with AUD.
