A Design of 5.8-GHz Dual-Mode Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transceiver IC With Sensitivity of-20 dBm and Peak Power Conversion Efficiency of 62% for IoT/Wearable Devices

This paper presents a 5.8-GHz simultaneous wireless information and power transceiver (SWIPT) IC with a sensitivity of -20 dBm and a peak power conversion efficiency of 62% for IoT/Wearable Devices. The SWIPT IC includes an energy harvesting (EH) receiver for energy transfer and an information decoding (ID) transceiver for data communication. The antenna captures RF energy, which the EH receiver then converts into DC voltage to charge the battery in IoT/Wearable devices. It also provides power to the on-chip ID transceiver for data communication. An adaptive power splitting ratio control scheme is proposed to optimize the power distribution between the EH and ID blocks. This is crucial for enhancing the overall performance of the SWIPT IC by enabling simultaneous EH and ID. The ID transceiver is equipped to demodulate signals modulated via amplitude shift keying (ASK), binary phase shift keying (BPSK), and schemes based on peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR).The SWIPT IC is fabricated using 1P5M 180-nm CMOS technology, and the die area measures 1.62 mm2. The power consumption of the EH and ID paths is 1.1 mW and 450 mu W, respectively. The measured sensitivity of the SWIPT IC is -20 dBm, and the measured peak power efficiency of the RF Energy Harvester is 62% when the RF input power level is +16 dBm at a frequency of 5.8 GHz. The power consumption of the injection-locked oscillator (ILO) based phase detection path is 450 mu W, allowing it to be powered from the EH Path when the input power level is high. The information path simultaneously demodulates signals modulated using quaternary amplitude shift keying (4-ASK) and binary phase shift keying (BPSK), thus resulting in 3 bits from the demodulation process.
