초록

Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day is a novel that most clearly reflects Englishness. Stevens, who stubbornly clings to his English identity in his service to Lord Darlington, has been losing his dignity as a butler alongside the decline of the British Empire and the downfall of Lord Darlington. In an attempt to restore the former glory of Darlington Hall, he decides to meet ex-coworker, Miss Kenton. Mr. While what Stevens longs to reclaim is the tradition of Britain’s once-glorious past, it is through the most American mobility(the Ford Car) that he embarks on this journey, signaling a crisis in his identity. The Remains of the Day seems to question the nostalgia for the past as seen from an outsider's perspective. Mobility, as a quintessential device of modernity, plays a leading role in driving this transformation.
