Despite ChatGPT's rapid integration into higher education, empirical evidence regarding its psychological consequences remains limited. This study examines the relationship between ChatGPT literacy and psychological well-being and investigates the underlying psychological mechanisms via academic self-efficacy, self-esteem, and user motivation. A total of 485 U.S. college students completed an online survey administered through a crowdsourcing platform. Regression and structural equation modelling analyses revealed a positive direct association between ChatGPT literacy and psychological well-being. Academic self-efficacy mediated this relationship, whereas the mediating role of self-esteem alone was not significant. However, the serial mediation via academic self-efficacy and self-esteem was supported. The moderating role of user motivation was not supported. These findings provide novel insights into the psychological mechanisms linking ChatGPT literacy and psychological well-being and suggest that higher levels of ChatGPT literacy are positively associated with students' psychological well-being regardless of motivation level.
