Building on a variety of the typologies proposed in the literature and analyzing an original dataset that includes key characteristics of party systems in the region (e.g. volatility, fragmentation, closure), the chapter examines to what extent party systems in Southeast Asian democracies (East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and the Philippines) are institutionalized. We do this by examining three different arenas (i.e. electoral, parliamentary, and governmental) while also trying to classify those six party systems according to the following three typologies: (1) The format and mechanism of interaction, (2) the pattern of power alternation, and (3) the number of poles and the dominant structure of competition.
