초록

Rare-earth elements (REEs) have emerged as a pivotal class of materials for electrochemical energy storage, due to their exceptional electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. The strategic incorporation of these materials into supercapacitor (SC) technology has garnered substantial research attention attributed to their potential to enhance key performance metrics such as specific capacitance, energy density, and cycling stability. While the researchers have published comprehensive reviews of REE-based materials over time, a detailed review focusing on the timely update and the role of REEs and related composites in SCs is urgently needed. Herein, this review carefully examines the recent advancements in REE-based oxides, sulfides, selenides, tellurides, and related composites as electrode materials for SCs. The intrinsic properties of REEs, including their variable oxidation states, high ionic radii, and strong electron-lattice interactions, are briefly analyzed to elucidate their impact on charge storage mechanisms and electrochemical performance. Key factors influencing the electrochemical behavior of REE-based SC electrodes are systematically explored. The review further investigates various synthetic methodologies for tailoring the microstructure, porosity, and surface chemistry of REEs and related composites. The performance of these materials in asymmetric SC configurations is evaluated with a focus on energy density, operating voltage, and cycling stability under real-world operating conditions. The interplay between electronic structure and electrochemical behavior is highlighted to provide a mechanistic understanding of enhanced charge storage. Lastly, the review outlines future research directions, highlighting the need for innovative material design, scalable synthesis routes, and advanced in situ characterization techniques, etc., to unlock the full potential of REEs in SC technology.
