The contemporary Korean language education landscape is characterized by unprecedented diversification in both its environments and learner demographics. Amidst these profound changes, critical questions arise regarding the optimal pedagogical approaches for increasingly diverse learners, the transformations observed within these learners in evolving educational contexts, and the necessary methodological adaptations and preparations for effectively addressing future learner diversity. This study critically explores these foundational issues from their origins. First, it re-evaluates the meaning of diversity within Korean language education, asserting that it extends beyond the superficial complexity of current learners. By centering the learner’s perspective, this research posits that diversity is inherently embedded in the very nature of learning itself. To elucidate this learner diversity, three pivotal themes are identified: ‘acceptance of multilingualism and multiculturalism,’ ‘removal of discrimination and barriers in multicultural spaces,’ and ‘expansion of learner agency in response to societal changes.’ These themes are further elaborated through the conceptual lenses of “Pluralistic,” “Equitable,” and “Agential.” Based on this comprehensive framework, the study delineates specific research areas through which Korean language education can broaden its academic scope.
