초록
This study focuses on the footwear culture observed in ancient Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Iranian Plateau examining the types, styles, and characteristics of shoes found in these regions. The research is based on artifact data such as reliefs, statues, and murals from major archaeological sites across different periods, regions, and ethnic groups. Additional references include museum exhibitions, catalogues, prior studies, and related literature. Chapter 2 provides a chronological overview of the the major states and ethnic groups of ancient West Asia in chronological order and explores their basic clothing culture. The study initially investigates the fundamental garments of prominent cultures, including those represented at Göbekli Tepe and Çatalhöyük, alongside the Sumerians, Old Babylonians, Hittites, Phrygians, Assyrians, and the Persian Empire. Based on this foundation, the analysis identifies three main types of footwear(sandal-type, slip-on-type, and boot-type) that evolved distinctly according to specific peoples and periods. Sandal-type footwear likely emerged at an early stage in response to climatic and geographical conditions. Slip-on shoes, though less prevalent, exhibit stylistic variations depending on the presence or absence of laces over the instep and typically extended over the ankle. A wide variety of boot-type footwear developed, displaying differences in toe shape, shaft height, and fastening methods. Notably, upturned toe designs first emerged in this region, subsequently influencing footwear styles across various cultures and subsequent eras. A key finding of this study is the identification of the origins and development of the upturned-toe shoes in ancient West Asia. Further research is needed to trace the lineage of this footwear type, beginning with Hittite examples. This study serves as a foundational basis for future comprehensive investigations into the footwear and clothing cultures of the broader West Asian region.
