Household microwave-assisted solvothermal deposition of various metal and metal oxide nanoparticles on one-dimensional carbon structures for electrocatalytic applications

Microwave-assisted synthesis is an attractive alternative to the conventional synthesis because of its rapid heating, high energy efficiency, facility and versatility despite its high initial cost of set-up. This article reports on a simple and fast household microwave oven assisted solvothermal process for depositing metal and metal oxide nanoparticles on 1-dimensional nanocarbon structures (Me/MeOx-NCSs). The method allows for deposition of metal, metal oxide, alloy, and oxide composite nanoparticles on NCSs without any pre-treatment; thus, the low defect concentration of NCS is maintained for Me/MeOx-NCSs and results in enhanced performance. For demonstration, the electrochemical property of Pt-NCS as a hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst is examined, which showed an enhanced electrocatalytic performance compared to the commercial Pt/C. In fact, Pt-NCS with 18.7 wt. % Pt exhibited an overpotential (at -10 mA cm-2) of -34.4±6.37 mV vs. RHE with a Tafel slope of 30.7 mV dec‑1, while the commercial 20 and 40 wt. % Pt/C exhibited overpotentials of -67 and -40 mV vs. RHE with Tafel slopes of 40.6 and 55.5 mV dec‑1, respectively. Further electrochemical analysis revealed that the well-maintained electrical property of NCSs and the low diffusion resistance of ions through the porous structure of NCSs network gave rise to the enhanced electrocatalytic performances. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
