A E band Vector Sum Phase Shifter With Switched Delay Line

This paper presents an E-band (72-76GHz) hybrid phase shifter that employs an active 4-bit current-DAC-based vector-sum architecture for coarse tuning and a passive 2-bit switched delay line for fine adjustment. The active phase shifter covers a full 360° range with a resolution of 22.5°, while the passive fine-tuning stage provides additional phase control from 0° to 16.875° with a resolution of 5.625°. The measured RMS phase error is < 2.96° at 71-76 GHz, with a corresponding RMS gain variation of 1.34 dB. The proposed design enables a compact form factor and simplifies the calibration process. It is implemented in a 40 nm CMOS process and consumes 10.6 mA from a 1.8 V power supply. The fabricated chip occupies a core area of 620 μm × 292 μm.
