Methane (CH4) conversion holds pivotal significance in addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable energy solutions, yet CH4 conversion requires harsh conditions due to the inert C-H bond in CH4. Photocatalysis emerges as a promising alternative, which leverages photon-induced high-energy carriers to cleave the robust C-H bond under mild conditions. Here, this review systematically examined the fundamental principles and critical advancements of photocatalytic CH4 conversion. Moreover, we highlighted the photocatalysts with precisely engineered active sites tailored for effective CH4 polarization and activation. Furthermore, advanced in situ spectroscopy techniques, spanning multiple scales and dimensions, were summarized and discussed as powerful tools for unraveling mechanistic details, thereby informing rational catalyst design. Finally, we presented balanced recommendations and standardized criteria to accelerate the practical implementation of photocatalytic CH4 conversion, also offered forward-looking perspectives to guide future research directions in this transformative field.
